DOVER — The retrial of a 31-year-old woman charged with sexual abuse of a minor while serving as his drug and alcohol counselor in 2015 is scheduled for next month.
Defendant Rebecca Q. Winters (also identified as Adams) will appear in Kent County Superior Court on Dec. 19 after her first case was declared a mistrial following defense objections to a Dover Police detective’s testimony.
Ms. Winters was released on conditions of her bail by Judge Jeffrey Clark on Oct. 20, and is facing multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor by a person in position of trust, and two charges of providing alcohol to a minor.
The case stemmed from investigation into an alleged relationship while Ms. Winters counseled the youth, then 16, at now defunct Crossroads of Delaware in Milford.
In declaring the mistrial, Judge Clark determined that the detective’s statements unfairly prejudiced Ms. Winters’ case before a jury of eight women and five men.
Deputy Attorney General Kathy Dickerson is prosecuting the case, and Ms. Winters is represented by attorney John Malik.
The youth’s family also filed a civil lawsuit in connection with the allegations.
