DOVER — An allegedly gun wielding 18-year-old Dover fugitive was arrested Wednesday afternoon after running past a school bus letting off students as police pursued, authorities said.

Kevon M. McKinney, of Bently Court, was apprehended in a wooded area behind the Dover Federal Credit Union on Saulsbury Road at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to the Dover Police Department.

Authorities said a loaded Beretta 9mm handgun was located in the near vicinity of where Mr. McKinney was taken into custody.

The alleged sequence began when Dover Police went to the Whatcoat Apartments area after a man reportedly was seen getting a gun from behind a bush and then sitting in the driver’s seat of a nearby vehicle, spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.

Cpl. Hoffman said officers quickly arrived after a witness call and attempted to contact the man later identified as Mr. McKinney.

Police said Mr. McKinney fled on foot past a school bus, with a gun allegedly visible in his hand.

“Officers were in close range of the suspect and pursuing him at the time,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

After the arrest officers returned from the foot chase and no school bus or children were present, police said.

“We did contact at least one school but the suspect was caught quickly, ending the need for us to notify or lockdown any schools,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

Charges included possession of a firearm by person prohibited, possession of firearm in a school zone, tampering with physical evidence, resisting arrest, loitering and local fugitive, police said.

Mr. McKinney was held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of $25,000 cash and $4,353 secured bond.

Dover Police said Mr. McKinney also had an active warrant from Delaware State Police Troop 9, was on home confinement and had a capias from Kent County Court of Common Pleas for a prior gun charge.

In another case, charges included, among others, disregarding a police officer’s signal, leaving the scene of a collision, reckless driving, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana with an aggravating factor, according to court documents.
