DOVER — Delaware’s congressional delegation of U.S. Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons and U.S. Rep. John Carney will host the second of two job fairs for veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilmington University’s Dover Campus.
The event is geared toward unemployed military veterans and will feature state and New Castle County government agencies, along with private businesses from each of Delaware’s three counties.
The fair is free and no registration is required for attendees.
The list of private employers slated to attend includes Allen Harim, Delaware State Police, Discover, Food Bank of Delaware, Habitat for Humanity, Integrity Staffing Solutions, Kent-Sussex Industries, Mountaire Farms, M&T Bank, Navient PATs Aircraft, Pepco Holdings, Polytech Adult Education, Perdue, Price Automotive Group, Sposato Landscape, UPS and others.
The event will be the eighth job fair for veterans hosted by Delaware’s Congressional delegation since 2011. The campus is located at 3282 N. DuPont Highway.
“It’s very important for Sen. Carper to give back to the veterans,” said Katie Wilson, Sen. Carper’s press secretary.
“He’s a veteran and understands the sacrifices that the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families have made to defend our nation’s freedoms.”
There are 21.2 million men and women veterans in the United States, and the unemployment rate is 5.3 percent, said Ms. Wilson.
“They just want to continue to give back any way that they can,” Ms. Wilson said.
“Sen. Carper hopes to continue to honor and care for veterans and ensure they receive the care and benefits they deserve.”
The first fair was held in Middletown on Aug. 3, which saw more than 100 veterans come out.
“We’re hoping for a great turn out,” Ms. Wilson said. “The veterans possess a lot of great qualities.
“We encourage jobs to hire these veterans. They are great candidates, which is why we hope to continue to hold these job fairs.”
