Brengle-2

Dover’s Madison Brengle won her first-round match at the U.S. open in three sets on Monday.

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y. — This has already been the best year of Madison Brengle’s tennis career.

But that doesn’t mean the 25-year-old from Dover is ready for it to be over just yet.

On Monday afternoon, Brengle added another memorable accomplishment to her 2015 resume by posting a U.S. Open victory.

Brengle picked up a tough 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 decision over China’s Saisai Zheng as tennis’ final Grand Slam event of the year got underway in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.

It’s the second straight year that Brengle has reached the second round of the U.S. Open in only the third time she’s played singles in the event.

Earlier this year Brengle made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

She’ll next play Anna Tatishvili, also 25 of the U.S. Tatishvili, who had to qualify just to make it into the main draw, upset eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-1, in her first-round match on Monday.

Tatishvili is 4-2 all-time against Brengle in head-to-head matches.

In Monday’s victory, Brengle made just one unforced error while Zheng committed six.

This marks the ninth time Brengle has played singles in a Grand Slam event. She’s now made it past the first round in three of the last five tournaments.

Ranked a career-best 35th in the world earlier this year, Brengle is currently ranked No. 47. She’s won $403,880 this year in prize money, almost matching the total for her entire career.

This is the first time in her career that Brengle has played in all four Grand Slam events in the same year.
