HARRINGTON — Personal stories of heroin’s ravages are scheduled for Tuesday night at the Harrington Fire Hall.
Connections Community Support Programs will host the event at 20 Clark Street, which begins with a free buffet dinner at 6 p.m., followed by presentations and a question and answer session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Connections spokesman Adam Taylor will begin with an overview of the heroin epidemic and how it evolved. Three parents of kids with heroin problems — including two fatally — will then share their experiences as part of the group Attack Addiction .
Included in the parent speakers is Liz Perkins, head of the Delaware Grief Recovery After Substance Passing organization tailored for those lost loved ones due to heroin.
Also, three young people currently in recovery will speak on the experience of use, withdrawal and recovery, along with how to stay clean, Connections said.
Additionally, Cathy McKay of Connections will offer information on Connections operations in downstate Delaware, and review the methadone center options in Long Neck and Dover. Mr. Taylor said a detox management center is set to open sometime this summer in Harrington.
Also participating is Seaford’s Acceptance, Change and Empowerment Center head Jim Martin, also leading the new Sussex County Action Prevention Coalition focused on addressing heroin issues.
