DOVER –– The first Farm to Fork Dinner, hosted by the Kent County Farm Bureau on Aug. 22, will feature fresh, locally grown and raised food and drink while supporting the Food Bank of Delaware.
“One of our members had been to a similar event in Maryland we thought it would be a great opportunity to feature the best locally grown food Kent County has to offer,” Caroline Foltz, public relations coordinator at the Delaware Farm Bureau said.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with an hour-long cocktail hour complete with hors d’oeuvers and local beer and wine from Mispillion River Brewing and Harvest Ridge Winery. The main course will be braised short ribs, raised at
TA Farms in Wyoming accompanied by side dishes of vegetables.
“Since this is hosted by the Kent County Farm Bureau, we made sure that everything that will be served was either grown or raised in Kent County, not just in Delaware,” Ms. Foltz said.
All food integrated in the hors d’oeuvers and main course come from Broad Acres, Fifer Orchards, Lazy Day Farms, Papen Farms and TA Farms. Each farm will have representatives on hand to explain the growing or raising process and provide information.
The meal will be prepared by Abbott’s Grill’s Chef Paul Gallo and students of the Food Bank’s Culinary School including the instructor Chef Tim.
All proceeds of the Farm to Fork Dinner will benefit the Food Bank of Delaware.
“The event that we are modeling the dinner after didn’t benefit anyone so when we decided to do one of our own, we chose to have it double as a fundraiser for the Food Bank because it’s such an important organization in our community,” Ms. Foltz said.
The Food Bank of Delaware partners with shelters, food closets and soup kitchens across the state that served 900,000 visitors in 2014. There are an estimated 120,000 food insecure families in Delaware and funds raised at the dinner can help lessen that number.
The Farm to Fork Dinner will take place at the family-owned and operated Knutsen Dairy Farm in Harrington on Aug. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $100 a person and available at delawarefarmbureau.eventbrite.com. The deadline to purchase tickets is Aug. 16.
Tours of the Knutsen Farm will also be available at no extra cost.
