DOVER — The shooting death of a 52-year-old Dover man late Thursday night is being investigated as a homicide, police said.
Anthony Wallace died at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover several hours after being found lying on the ground unresponsive in an alley at about 10:46 p.m. He suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper torso, Dover Police said.
Officers arrived at the scene in the area of Spruance and Mitscher roads just north of East Division Street after receiving a call when someone found Mr. Wallace on the ground, spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.
While it was uncertain how long Mr. Wallace had been wounded before officers arrived, Cpl. Hoffman said, “we believe it wasn’t much longer than from when it was reported …”
Investigators canvassed the area upon arrival “and once again when daylight broke this morning,” according to Cpl. Hoffman.
Police could not disclose whether any physical evidence was recovered and were not aware of any bystanders present when officers arrived to investigate.
After police found the late Mr. Wallace unresponsive, a request for EMS assistance was made. Responding medics examined the injured man and discovered the gunshot wound that proved fatal.
Dover Police ask anyone with information to call 736-7130. Callers may remain anonymous.
