SmartDrive program coordinator Guy VanderLek performs a surprise seat belt safety check during dismissal at Dover High School on Thursday. As vehicles left the school’s parking lots at the end of the school day, Ofc. Demetrius Stephenson of the Dover Police Department, assisted by SmartDrive’s Teen Driving Safety professionals and volunteers from local State Farm insurance agencies, checked for seat belt use by the driver and the passengers in each vehicle. Drivers and passengers found to be using their seat belts correctly were rewarded with coupons for a free Appetizer at Texas Roadhouse restaurants, a free Slurpee® drink at area 7-Eleven stores as well as #Drive2N2 safety reminders from State Farm. The SmartDrive Foundation was established in 2005 to reduce teen driver deaths and injuries by providing online defensive driving programs to teen drivers at all high schools in Delaware, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and in suburban Southeastern Pennsylvania.
