DOVER — Democratic nominee for governor John Carney listed more than $900,000 on hand as of Sunday — nearly 11 times the amount his Republican rival possesses.
According to financial disclosure reports filed with the state, U.S. Rep. Carney raised $897,000 from Jan. 1 to Oct. 9, adding to the $450,000 he pulled in last year. His 2016 donations came from 27 different states.
Republican nominee Colin Bonini has raised $107,000 since last year. He had admitted fundraising has been difficult this year, a fact likely stemming from Rep. Carney’s perceived strength in a Democratic-leaning state.
The stark disparity in money lends further credence to the notion Rep. Carney has a big lead driven by voter registration and name recognition. A University of Delaware poll released last week gave him a 57-25 edge.
Rep. Carney has $908,000 in total on hand, while state Sen. Bonini had $83,600.
State Sen. Bethany Hall-Long, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor raised $46,900 from Sept. 6 to Oct. 9, bringing her total to about $310,000. Republican nominee La Mar Gunn had about $13,700 available after raising $17,600.
Democratic Insurance Commissioner nominee Trinidad Navarro had vastly more cash than Republican Jeff Cragg, $40,400 to $2,700.
In the race for the open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican Hans Reigle received $178,000 in donations as of Sept. 30. The total numbers for Lisa Blunt Rochester, who beat five candidates in the Democratic primary, were last updated Aug. 24 and had her raising $566,000, in addition to hundreds of thousands of dollars in self-loans.
In local legislative races incumbents raised more than challengers this year in every contested Kent County race except for the 14 Senatorial District. There, Sen. Bruce Ennis, D-Smyrna, pulled in $20,300, while Republican Carl Pace has raised $28,000.
In the open 33rd Representative District, Republican Charles Postles raised $15,700, giving him an edge over Democrat Karen Williams and her $14,000. Mr. Postles spent about half his funds in last month’s primary.
Among Kent County districts, the closest race in terms of fundraising is the 30th District. Rep. Bobby Outten, R-Harrington, received $10,100 this year, while challenger Charles Groce pulled in $5,800.
The election is Nov. 8.
