DOVER — A 52-year-old was arrested on a felony DUI charge Saturday after he first called 911 to report a disorderly person at his home, according to police in court papers.
According to the Delaware State Police in a probable cause affidavit, a trooper arrived at William Newman Jr.’s home on Norway Drive in the Pinewood Acres Mobile Home Park at 10:21 p.m. and saw him helping his mother into a vehicle with keys in his hand.
The trooper said in papers Mr. Newman was walking toward the vehicle’s driver side when contacted, and said he was “fed up with disorderly subjects in the area and was leaving” for his sister’s residence in Cheswold.
“At this point, a strong odor of alcohol was coming from [Newman’s] mouth,” according to the affidavit.
Police described Mr. Newman’s eyes as “bloodshot, watery and glassy” and he said “he intended to leave and drive his mother to Cheswold so she could rest.”
A pre-screening test was administered, police said in documents, and Mr. Newman allegedly grabbed vehicle keys from the trunk and repeated his intention to drive the vehicle.
Police said Mr. Newman was transported to Troop 9 for an intoxilyzer test.
The Criminal Justice Information System showed Mr. Newman was previously convicted of DUI in August 2006 and March 2009.
