Delaware jumped out to a four-goal lead at halftime and the 12th-ranked Blue Hen field hockey team needed every bit of that offense Sunday afternoon as it held on to defeat Indiana, 5-4, in a non-league matchup at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware (6-2) extended its winning streak to two games and remained unbeaten at home with a 4-0 mark as the Hens got goals from six different players in the victory over Indiana (4-4). It was the first meeting between the two programs.
After the Hens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes and took a 4-0 advantage into halftime, Indiana came to life in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of 12 minutes to pull to within 5-4 with 11:14 remaining.
But the Hens held on from there as UD goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans made a big stop off a penalty corner with 1:45 left. A shot by Indiana’s Kate Barber off a penalty corner with time expired was wide left by about a foot.
Delaware outshot Indiana 18-12 and held an 11-6 advantage in corners.
College soccer
WOMEN, UMBC 3, Delaware State 1: The Hornets’ hopes for a comeback win were short-lived in the loss.
The Hornets trailed 2-0 when Braxton Clark scored on DSU’s lone shot on goal of the game to cut the Retrievers’ lead to one in the 68th minute. But DelState’s celebration lasted just 46 seconds as UMBC answered with an insurance score to regain a two-goal lead.
DSU goal keeper Michele Lammers had six saves in the opening period to help keep the Hornets in the match. Leslie Fazio (Sussex Tech) recorded five saves in the second period for the Hornets, who were outshot 30-8.
Wesley 3, Lehman 0: Aleya Cummings (Caesar Rodney) maintained her Division III-leading scoring pace, netting a pair of goals, her 11th and 12th of the season, to pace the Wolverines on Saturday night.
Janiah Moore (CR) added a score in the waning minutes as well for Wesley (4-2).
MEN, Delaware 2, William & Mary 1: Senior Guillermo Delgado set a school record with his 101st career point while classmate Jaime Martinez concluded the evening in dramatic fashion as his second goal of the season crossed the goal line as time expired in double overtime.
In the end, Delaware (6-1) picked up its fourth straight win over William & Mary in its Colonial Athletic Association opener on Saturday night. The Hens outshot the Tribe, 18-4, and also held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
College football
CR grad Steindl honored: Caesar Rodney High grad Tim Steindl, a junior kicker/punter for the Salisbury football team, was named the Special Teams Player of the week for the New Jersey Athletic Conference on Sunday.
In the Sea Gulls’ win over Montclair State on Saturday, he averaged 61.3 yards per kickoff on seven attempts, including four touchbacks. Steindl also averaged 40 yards per punt on two attempts, both of which were downed inside the MSU 20-yard line.
Steindl currently ranks fourth in the NJAC in punting average (41.9).
College volleyball

Wesley wins two: The Wesley College volleyball team earned a pair of wins on Sunday, taking down John Jay and Washington Adventist each by a score of 3-0 at Wentworth Gym.
In the Wolverines’ first match, a 25-16, 25-12, 25-14 win, Tionne Graves-Brown earned a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Codi Ziolkowski added 10 kills while Kristin Wissler chipped in with a team-high 12 digs.
Wesley (7-3) downed Washington Adventist 25-9, 25-4, 25-7, for its second victory.
Kaya Ziskay had 10 service aces, tying the Wolverines’ program single-match record. She also tallied four digs and five kills on just seven swings. Tania Rounds led the team with six kills and added four service aces. Beth Schlecker finished with a team-high 13 assists in the match.
High school field hockey
Indian River 3, Woodbridge 0: Lexi Haden scored twice while Madi McGee had a goal and two assists to pace the Indians to the Henlopen Conference win on Saturday.
Mya Parks made a pair of saves for IR which held advantages of 12-2 in shots and 7-5 in corners.
Emily Adams made six saves for the Raiders.
Boys’ soccer
Tri-State Christian, Md. 4, St. Thomas More 1: Branden Riva scored for the Ravens in their loss on Saturday.
High school cross country
Dover boys place fourth: Dover High placed fourth in the boys’ meet while the Senator girls were sixth at Tatnall’s Oberod Invitational cross country meet over the weekend.
Dover’s Sean Saxton placed fifth individually while Nyjal Drayton, Gavin Williams, Nate Guy and Tjah Ward also ran for the Senators. Ashley Jones, Emily Cook, Aiyana Ewell, Sophie Malenfant, and Anita Brown competed for Dover’s girls.
