DOVER — Two suspects were arrested Monday after investigation into an armed robbery at a city hotel a day earlier, police said.
Marquis Harris, 20, of the 400 block of Northdown Drive of Dover, and Darren Tolson, 21, listed as homeless, were taken into custody after a traffic stop at an undisclosed location and time.
Dover Police later charged them with three felony offenses each after interviews.
Police said they investigated a reported incident at the Dover Inn at 5:15 a.m. Sunday.
It involved three unidentified suspects, two carrying firearms, who allegedly entered a hotel room and demanded money.
The suspects were described as black males, police said, one with a small handgun and another with a rifle.
Authorities said investigation determined that the suspects fled from the room out a rear window in an unknown direction from the hotel at 428 N. DuPont Highway.
No injuries were reported during the incident, police said.
Charges included first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and second-degree conspiracy. Both men were held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna on $80,400 secured bond.
Police said they did not believe the hotel incident to be a random act. They declined to comment on a possible motive.
According to police in an affidavit of probable cause, a Criminal Investigations Unit officer contacted four people who said “they were hanging out” in a Dover Inn room “when they heard a knock on the door.”
The door was opened, and two black males were seen holding a long rifle and handgun, according to court papers.
Those inside reportedly were ordered to leave the room as suspects demanded money, police said in documents.
In court papers, police said they were told that about $824 and a gold ring valued at about $275 were turned over to the suspects before they fled.
Police said in papers Mr. Harris was driving a vehicle that was stopped on Monday, which included Mr. Tolson and another passenger whose name was redacted.
A Dover Police news release said three men were described in the incident.
The status of a third person was undisclosed when the arrests were made.
The investigation was ongoing, police said on Tuesday.
Mr. Tolson was charged with allegedly possessing a handgun, and Mr. Harris allegedly was holding a rifle, according to charging documents.
