Marist scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and an insurance run in the ninth in a 4-2 come-from-behind win over Delaware State in the Hornets’ baseball home opener at Soldier Field on Friday.
DSU (0-13) led 2-0 after three innings, but gave up the last four runs to remain winless this season. The Red Foxes improved to 3-7.
The Hornets opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Darnel Maisonet started the rally with a one-out double. Three batters later, Chris Panzarella singled up the middle to score Maisonet with the game’s first run.
Delaware State opened up a 2-0 lead with a run in the third. Todd Henry doubled to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a one-out wild pitch.
There was still one out when Cameron Onderko singled through the second base hole to score Henry.
Delaware State put a runner on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Marist reliever Ryan Thomas retired the last two batters to earn his second save of the season.
Marist starter Sean Keenan (2-1) allowed eight hits and two runs, while striking out six without a walk to record the win. Henry and Maisonet had two hits each for the Hornets.
Delaware 13, Binghampton 2: The Blue Hens (8-4), winners of three straight and five of their last six, collected a season-high 13 runs in the win.
Delaware broke the game open with nine runs in the sixth.
Blue Hen sophomore Ron Marinaccio (4-0) pitched seven solid innings, giving up only one run on three hits, He became the first UD starting pitcher to start the season 4-0 since Matt Heppner opened the 2006 season with a 5-0 mark.
Shortstop Nick Tierno cleared the bases with a grand slam in the sixth. Second baseman Doug Trimble had three hits and an RBI and Kyle Baker had three hits and two RBI. Nick Spadafino (Dover) relieved Marinaccio in the eighth with a scoreless inning and Zach Flowers closed the game in the ninth.
College softball
Wesley drops two in Fla.: On its final day of competition at The Spring Games, Wesley College fell 2-1 to Misericordia and 3-1 to Lakeland.
In game one, Samantha Burns (Polytech) went 4-for-4 while Lauren Hoffman recorded the the Wolverines’ only RBI.
Freshman Sydney Botsch (Smyrna) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs in the top of the first before shutting out the Cougars down the rest of the way. She finished with four strikeouts.
In game two, Wesley (5-7) got eight hits from its first four hitters. Lindsay Siok (Milford) scattered eight hits, allowing just two earned runs.
Wesley’s lone run came in the top of the third inning when Burns led off with a single, moved to second on an illegal pitch, stole third, and then took home on an errant pickoff play.
Hens split two: Delaware posted a 9-0 victory over North Carolina A&T before falling to Albany, 6-2, in the UD Spring Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (11-6) jumped on the Aggies in their first game of the day by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning, all with two outs. Leanna Gearhart legged out an infield single to drive home Lisa Stacevicz, and after Alyshia Dellatore scored on a wild pitch, RBI singles by Mattie Nuccio and Mariah Kondravy put Delaware in front 4-0.
UD starting pitcher Kiersten Coffman (7-3) allowed just one hit and no walks in four innings.
DSU goes 1-1 in tourney: Delaware State edged North Northern Illinois, 6-5, in nine innings but fell to host North Carolina State, 12-0, on Friday in the Wolfpack’s RDU Challenge.
Chloe Oro singled home Khaliyah Flournory with the winning run in DSU’s victory.
College lacrosse
WOMEN, Central Michigan 19, Delaware State 5: The Chippewas (2-2) led 10-1 by halftime and outshot the Hornets 40-14 before winning the first home game in their history.
DelState (2-4) had a two-game winning streak snapped.
