Cape Henlopen High swept both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the Henlopen Conference swimming championships on Saturday.
In the boys’ standings, the Vikings finished with 281 points, besting second-place Sussex Tech (264) in the meet held at Lake Forest High.
Cape topped the girls’ team standings with 303 points. Sussex Tech was also second in the girls’ meet with 228 points.
Individually, Cape’s Jack Weeks set a meet record in the boys’ 100 butterfly with a time of 58.26 seconds.
The Vikings’ girls’ 200 freestyle relay team also set a meet record. The team of Sarah Hyde, Amelia Nigh-Johnson, Sarah Rambo and Molly Weeks finished in a time of 1:55.29.
Those same four swimmers won two relays. Rambo and Hyde also won two individual events apiece with Nigh-Johnson and Molly Weeks winning one each.
Sussex Tech’s Hannah Venables was named the Outstanding Swimmer in the girls’ meet after capturing two individual titles and swimming on a winning relay.
Indian River’s Mason Sanders was the boys’ Outstanding Swimmer. The senior won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
Cape’s Jack Weeks took the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke while being a part of two winning relays.
Caesar Rodney’s Maureen VanOrman was named the Henlopen Coach of the Year for both the boys and the girls.
Boys’ basketball
Smyrna 74, Sussex Central 46: Senior Ja’vier Worthy netted 23 points, including the 1,000th point of his career, to pace the Eagles to the Henlopen North victory.
Smyrna, which led by 20 at halftime, also got double-digit scoring from Caleb Matthews (13) and Jaymeir Garnett (11).
Ethan Lambert had 13 points to lead the Golden Knights with Tai’Ron Abbott scoring 10.
Indian River 49, Caesar Rodney 48: Three players scored in double figures as Indian River edged CR.
In a contest that was close throughout, the Indians outscored the Riders, 15-14, in the fourth quarter to take the victory.
Isaiah Bratton had a team-high 17 points for IR with Jamier Felton and Antonio Jones added 10 apiece.
Jaquan Hooks netted a game-high 18 points to lead CR with Jayvon Palmer scoring 12.
Hodgson 90, Sussex Tech 88: Greg Tucker hit a pair of foul shots with 1.7 seconds left as the Eagles kept the Ravens winless.
Sussex Tech rallied from a 10-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to tie the game at 88-88.
Kevin Troyer tallied a team-high 24 points for the Ravens with Jaquan Burton scoring 17.
Girls’ basketball
St. Elizabeth 66, Dover 53: The Vikings built a 28-point halftime before posting the nonconference victory.
Brionna Hill tallied 17 points to pace Dover.
Wrestling
Smyrna 32, Cape Henlopen 26: Hunter Moyer’s pin in the night’s final match gave Smyrna a dramatic 32-26 in Henlopen Conference Northern Division wrestling on Friday night.
The match was tied 26-26 when Moyer won by fall in 3:31 in the 195-pound bout.
The victory allowed the Eagles (11-0 overall) to finish unbeaten in the North at 6-0. The pairings for the DIAA Division I and II dual-meet state tournament will be determined on Sunday.
The Eagles collected four pins, also getting falls from Nicholas Natarcola (106 pounds), Gregory Baum (120) and Anthony Wuest (182).
Vincent Diego (138) had a pin for Cape.
Bowling
Seaford’s Foy falls in tourney: Seaford’s Tim Foy Jr. was eliminated from the USBC Masters bowling tournament on Saturday at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.
After going 3-0 in match play on Friday, Foy, who qualified 42nd for the 64-player head-to-head competition, was sent to the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination format when he lost to Dan McClelland, 656-637, in the three-games, total pins series. Ryan Ciminelli, who owns five PBA titles including the 2015 U.S. Open, then ended Foy’s run at the Masters with a 658-636 series decision.
Ironically, against both McClelland and Ciminelli, Foy won two games in the series.
Foy, 28, averaged 211.93 over his 15 qualifying games, then averaged 210.20 over 15 games of match play. Foy earned $3,600.
ESPN will telecast the Masters top-five finals today at 1 p.m.
College basketball
MEN, Wesley 84, Frostburg State 82, OT: Anthony Bowers drilled a pull-up jumper with five seconds left in overtime to give the Wolverines the Capital Athletic Conference win.
J.W. Lawson came off the bench to score a game-high 30 points for Wesley (6-10 CAC, 8-15 overall). Bowers finished with 13 points with Wayne Lennon adding a double-double, scoring 14 and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Jordan Johnson finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Bobcats scored five unanswered points in the final 35 seconds of regulation to tie the game and force overtime.
The Wolverines are one game back of the sixth and final CAC playoff spot. They finish their regular season with a pair of home games, hosting PSU-Harrisburg on Wednesday night and taking on St. Mary’s on Saturday.
WOMEN, Wesley 76, Frostburg State 72, OT: Smyrna High grad Alexus Stroud reached a career-high in points for the fourth time in five games, scoring 30 to lead the Wolverines to the Capital Athletic Conference win.
Brionna Johnson (Smyrna) netted 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for a double-double for Wesley (5-11 CAC, 6-17 overall). The game went back-and-forth affair with six lead changes and eight ties.
With less than a minute remaining and the Wolverines trailing by three, Tiyanna Gibbs forced her way to the rim, made a contested layup and drew contact for the foul. The sophomore drilled the game-tying foul shot to tie the game with 39 seconds left.
Wesley denied Frostburg on two attempts at the game-winning shot, and just missed a game-winner themselves as time expired.
Johnson scored seven of the Wolverines’ 14 overtime points, going 2-for-3 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the foul line in the period. With 50 seconds left Frostburg cut the lead to 71-69 with a basket, but Tiara White came through with a huge offensive rebound, putback, and three-point play to seal the victory for Wesley.
The Wolverines sit one game back of St. Mary’s for the sixth and final CAC playoff spot, tied with Penn State-Harrisburg. Wesley takes on PSU-Harrisburg on Wednesday at home before ending their regular season by hosting St. Mary’s on Saturday.
