10th trial date set for Dover man charged with drugs, weapons offenses

DOVER — A 10th trial date has been set for a 35-year-old Dover man arrested in October 2014 on drugs and weapons charges.

Anthony D. Benson’s jury trial was scheduled for Monday. However, a scheduling problem pushed it to Monday, Feb. 15, in Kent County Superior Court, according to officials.

In 2015, trial dates were scheduled for March 31, May 4, Sept. 22, Nov. 2, Nov. 17, Dec. 7 and Dec. 15. In 2016 trial dates were Jan. 20 and Feb. 8.

Mr. Benson is facing two charges of possession of a firearm by person prohibited, and counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, drug dealing, disregarding a police signal, second-degree reckless endangering, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, along with 10 alleged traffic violations.

According to Dover Police in 2014, Mr. Benson had an active capias when officers attempted to make a vehicle stop in the area of Kings Highway and Division Street.

A short vehicle pursuit ended in the rear alley of Upland Avenue, police said.

Mr. Benson was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit, police said.

Police allege that a loaded .38-caliber revolver and 3.6 grams of crack cocaine were found in the vehicle.

After arraignment, Mr. Benson was held by the Delaware Department of Correction on secured bond.

Mr. Benson was indicted by a Kent County grand jury on Jan. 5, 2015, court documents state. The arrest date was Oct. 22, 2014.

Deputy Attorney General Lindsay Taylor is prosecuting the case. Lawyer William Deely is representing Mr. Benson.
