DOVER — State Sen. Bryan Townsend’s campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives raised $212,000 from the middle of September to the end of December, a spokesman said Monday.

The Newark Democrat announced Sept. 17 he would run for state’s lone seat in the House. The current officeholder, Democratic Rep. John Carney, is running for governor this year, marking just the second time since 1992 the congressional seat will be open.
Five Democrats and two Republicans have either declared or filed for the office so far, setting the stage for a bruising Democratic primary.
According to Sen. Townsend’s campaign, more than 460 donors contributed. In a statement, the senator and his chairman trumpeted the news as evidence of a “grassroots following.”
State Rep. Bryon Short, D-Arden, who launched his campaign one week after Sen. Townsend, raised $71,913 in the third quarter of 2015.
All his donations are recorded as coming in the final two weeks of September.
Rep. Short had $71,783 on hand as of the end of September.
Republican Hans Reigle of Wyoming, who announced his intentions to run April 8, had raised $48,572, with $30,462 on hand as of Sept. 30.
None of the other candidates had reported any outside contributions. A year-end report is due to the Federal Election Commission by Jan. 31.
