Known for her television and movie appearances, Ms. Sykes first came to prominence during her five years as a performer and writer on HBO’s “The Chris Rock Show,” where she was nominated for three Emmy Awards and in 1999 won for “Outstanding Writing for Variety, Music or Comedy Special.”
Ms. Sykes also starred for five seasons on the CBS sitcom “New Adventures of Old Christine,” had her own late-night talk show for Fox, “The Wanda Sykes Show,” wrote, produced and starred in Fox’s “Wanda at Large,” and has appeared on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
On the big screen, she has appeared in “Evan Almighty,” “Monster-In-Law,” and “My Super Ex-Girlfriend,” and she can be heard in several recent animated features, including “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” “Rio,” “Over the Hedge,” and “Barnyard.”
Ms. Sykes, an American Comedy Award winner, has been the star of two HBO specials (“Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired” in 2006 and “I’ma Be Me” in 2009). Her first special, “Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied” premiered on Comedy Central in 2003.
Born in Portsmouth, Va., and raised in Maryland, she graduated from Hampton University in Hampton, Va. In 2010, Sykes won a GLAAD award for her efforts to promote equal rights for gays and lesbians. In 2012, Ms. Sykes, along with veteran producer Page Hurwitz, formed Push It Productions, a company creating comedy-based programming for network and cable television outlets. The company’s first set of specials, “Herlarious,” aired in 2013 and 2014 on OWN and was the recipient of a 2014 Gracie Award.
